Central Andes
May 2011:
A non-profit small group butterfly watching adventure to central Peru, researched, organized, and led by Adrian Hoskins in conjunction with local guides.
Lima to Satipo:
Our tour began in Lima, where we were greeted by our guides Manuel and Ruben, along with our driver Abel. Setting off at dawn, we embarked on a journey over the Andes to Satipo. Along the way, we made a stop in Tarma, where we encountered our first butterflies of the trip, including Colias euxanthe and the diminutive Painted Lady Vanessa carye. Continuing our journey, we paused at a patch of roadside scrub at an elevation of approximately 2000m, where we were delighted to find several species of skippers, such as Gesta gesta, Pyrgus omrina, Pyrgus ocnus, and Hylephila phylaeus.

Mariposa:
In the following days, our exploration took us to several sites near Satipo, beginning with Mariposa, a picturesque cloudforest location situated at an altitude of approximately 700m. Alongside a gulley by the roadside, we encountered several captivating butterflies, including the striking Blue Doctor (Rhetus periander) and four species of Dynamine. Crossing the scenic Rio Pampa Hermosa via a suspension bridge, we embarked on a narrow trail that offered us a wonderful introduction to the butterflies of the eastern Andes.
Among the multitude of species observed along the trail were the charming Anartia amathea, adorned in black, white, and red, the iridescent blue Lasaia agesilas, and a diverse array of Ithomiine glasswings, including Hypoleria lavinia, Pteronymia sao, and Hyaliris mestra. Other noteworthy discoveries included the distinctively marked Oressinoma typhla with its white bands and the elegant long-tailed skipper Urbanus belli, a fast-flying species that graciously settled on the same leaf multiple times, facilitating our observations and photography.
After a delightful meal courtesy of the local trout farm, we set up our moth sheet, quickly finding ourselves surrounded by a swirling swarm of Pantherodes moths. The abundance was so great that breathing without inadvertently ingesting a few moths became a challenge. Additionally, the mercury vapor lamp attracted several hawkmoths and an imposing Dobsonfly—a creature boasting a 10cm abdomen, a wingspan of about 15cm, and formidable jaws capable of inflicting considerable pain if bitten. We approached it with caution and respect.
Catarata Bayoz:
On the following day, we ventured to the impressive Catarata de Bayoz waterfall, renowned as a superb butterfly site. Here, we encountered Diaethria numberwings, Zaretis leafwings, Smyrna blomfildia, Danaus plexippus, Dryas iulia, and the breathtaking Blue-spotted Firewing (Catonephele numilia). Among other notable sightings were Nessaea hewitsoni, adorned with bright blue on its upperside and leaf-green underneath, the vibrant orange Daggerwing (Marpesia berania), several Adelpha species, and the vivid pink Brazilian Painted Lady (Vanessa brasiliensis).

Rio Shima:
Rio Shima stands out as one of the most prolific butterfly sites across South America, drawing numerous visits from our tour groups over the years. Previously, accessing the site involved a somewhat challenging two-hour trek through the cloudforest. However, this year, a newly carved logging road streamlined the journey, rendering the walk remarkably easy.
As we leisurely strolled along the road, our excitement soared upon encountering a pristine Pterourus zagreus indulging in puddling by a stream. Shortly thereafter, we were delighted to discover a striking blue Amazon Cracker (Hamadryas chloe) basking on a tree trunk.
While most of our tour accommodations are comfortable hotels, our stay at Rio Shima entails camping beside a stream in a modest wooden shack. Though not the most luxurious setting, the sheer abundance and diversity of butterflies within a five-minute walk of the shack are truly awe-inspiring.
One fortunate member of our group chanced upon the exquisite Giant Green Hairstreak (Evenus batesii), while the rest of us marveled at the magnificent sightings, including the metallic blue Morpho rhetenor, Caligo teucer Owl butterflies, an array of dazzling Doxocopa Emperors, Agrias amydon, numerous captivating Callicore species, and a profusion of exquisite metalmarks, such as the stunning red-barred Amarynthis meneria, the endearing Sarota gyas, and no fewer than five distinct Caria species.

Skipper enthusiasts encountered a plethora of captivating species at Rio Shima, including the striking blue-banded Phocides metrodorus, Elbella theseus, and Jemadia hewitsoni, alongside the stunning yellow Myscelus nobilis and the delightful green-shouldered Gorgopas trochilus.
Each night at Rio Shima, a mercury vapor lamp was utilized to illuminate the area, attracting over 500 moth species. The diverse array of colors, patterns, shapes, and peculiar postures adopted by the moths was truly remarkable. Many of these fascinating insects can be observed on the Moths – Amazon and Andes pages.
Rio Tambo:
This year, a new site near the Rio Tambo was explored, where several mud-puddling Philaethria dido butterflies were sighted. Known for their stunning and graceful appearance, these butterflies exhibit translucent green “windows” in their wings. Additionally, at a spot where a small stream crossed the logging road, the transparent-winged skipper Oxynetra confusa and swarms of Dynamine species were observed. Following the exploration, the group crossed the river by ferry and enjoyed lunch at a riverside restaurant before returning to Satipo.

Catarata de Tirol:
Within the narrow trails of this steep-sided forest valley, we encountered several attractive species not found elsewhere on the tour. These included Mesotaenia vaninka, Catasticta reducta, the blue ringlet Chloreuptychia herseis, and Patia orise – a transparent Pierid that remarkably mimics the giant Methona glasswings. Positioned strategically near a Heliconia plant, we hoped to attract a Eurybia, and within minutes, Eurybia dardus arrived to seek nectar.
Dry Western Andes:
During our return journey from Satipo to Lima, we decided to explore an unusual habitat – a hot, dry area with sparse vegetation at an altitude of about 3000m on the western slope of the Andes near San Mateo. Typically, such habitats yield only a few species, often mundane skippers like Pyrgus bocchoris. However, on this occasion, we encountered something extraordinary – the very rare silvery-grey hairstreak Strymon daraba.

Lima :
Landslides and miners strikes can occasionally disrupt travel on the road between Satipo and Lima, so we arranged to get back to the capital early, with a comfortable safety margin before catching our return flights to the UK.
We used our time productively in uptown Miraflores, fitting in a fabulous buffet lunch, an excellent souvenir market, and a thoroughly entertaining evening show, before saying goodbye to our hosts and vowing to return again next year!
Species list (provisional, 21 November 2011)
This species list was compiled by Adrian Hoskins. It comprises those species which were identifiable from photographs but excludes the 50 or so other species which were seen but not photographed, or were impossible to identify from photographs.
The Nymphalidae (sensu lato), and the Pieridae, Papilionidae, Riodinidae & Lycaenidae were identified using Bernard d’Abrera’s 7 volume classic – “Butterflies of the Neotropical Region,” cross-checked with other resources. Several revisions, e.g. Willmott’s “The genus Adelpha,” and many scientific papers were consulted, to ensure that the list is as accurate as possible. Nomenclature of all taxa follows Lamas (2004).
