Introduction

The genus Abantis comprises of 23 species, all of which are confined to sub-Saharan Africa.

Abantis elegantula is a rare species, found from Sierra Leone to western Kenya and Zambia.

Habitats

This butterfly is found in sunny forest edge habitats, often in the vicinity of streams or waterfalls.

Lifecycle

The lifecycle is unknown. The larval foodplants of other Abantis species include Euphorbiaceae, Annonaceae, Sapindaceae and Sterculiaceae.

Adult behaviour

Males of this species are usually seen singly, when imbibing moisture from damp paths in forest edge habitats. They have a rapid whirring flight close to the ground, and usually fully outspread their wings while feeding. If disturbed they do not generally return to the same spot.
