Introduction

The genus Eicochrysops comprises of 17 species, all of which are Afrotropical in distribution.

The adult of hippocrates is superficially very similar to Thermoniphas but Eicochrysops are more closely related to Cupidopsis. Most are montane species.

Eicochrysops hippocrates is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, including Madagascar.

Habitats

This species is associated with damp habitats including swamps, lakes and streams whether they be in forested or open savannah habitats.

Lifecycle

The larvae feed on Polygonum and Rumex ( Polygonaceae ).

Adult behaviour

Males are usually encountered singly, perching on rocks or foliage at the edges of streams. They are highly pugnacious and will chase after any insect which intrudes into their territory. Both sexes nectar at Lamiaceae and other herbaceous flowering plants.
