Weaver’s Fritillary Clossiana dia, Aggtelek, Hungary – Peter Bruce-Jones
Introduction
There are about 30 Clossiana species, distributed variously across the Holarctic region. Males of all species are bright orange, with black spots, bars and submarginal chevrons or crescents. Females are generally duller in colour, and often more reddish than the males. The undersides of all species are marbled on orange and pale yellow, and have silvery-white markings on the hindwings.
Clossiana dia is distributed from western Europe to Siberia.

Lifecycle
The larval foodplants include Rubus ( Rosaceae ), Prunella ( Lamiaceae ) and Viola ( Violaceae ).
Adult behaviour
The butterflies are weak flyers, and tend to keep low to the ground. They are only active in bright sunshine, and go to roost on dead flowerheads in overcast conditions.
