Introduction

The genus Hyphilaria comprises of 4 described species found variously from Mexico to Paraguay. The butterflies are closely allied to Leucochimona and to Cremna, in which thasus is still placed by some authorities.

Hyphilaria thasus is the commonest and most widely distributed species. It is found from south-east Mexico to Bolivia and Paraguay.

Habitats

This species is found in undisturbed rainforest at elevations between about 100-800m.

Adult behaviour

Males perch open-winged beneath leaves, peeking out to watch for passing butterflies, and darting out rapidly to intercept anything that might potentially be a female of their own species.
