Anteros renaldus, Satipo, Peru – Emily Halsey
Introduction
There are 16 species in the genus Anteros, distributed variously from Mexico to Bolivia. The genus is closely allied to Sarota and Helicopis, and like them is characterised by having silvery markings on the underside wings, and very “furry” legs.Anteros renaldus is distributed from Nicaragua to Brazil and Peru.
Habitats
This species is found in rainforest and humid deciduous forest at altitudes between about 200-800m.
Lifecycle
The larvae are translucent greenish-grey, covered densely with very long white setae. They live solitarily, and in Costa Rica are known to feed on Inga and Myrcia.
Adult behaviour
The adults are elusive and usually encountered singly in the vicinity of rivers or streams. Males can sometimes be found settled on stones or boulders imbibing mineralised moisture. They always hold their wings erect when settled. On several occasions I have known this species to come to mercury vapour lamps in early evening.
