Introduction
In the neotropical region there are 2365 described species of Hesperiidae, split into 5 subfamilies – Pyrrhopyginae: 163 species, Heteropterinae: 139 species, Megathyminae: 32 species, Pyrginae: 991 species; and Hesperiinae. The Hesperiines (1040 sp) are known as Grass Skippers, because their larvae feed on grasses, bamboos and other monocotyledons.
The genus Anatrytone comprises of 8 species, variously distributed from the USA to Argentina and Paraguay. Visual diagnostics of Anatrytone include a golden yellow underside, unmarked apart from a series of tiny black marginal dots; and a sharply angled hindwing costa. The uppersides of both sexes of all species have a golden-yellow ground colour, heavily marked with dark brown. In most species there is a suffused broad dark brown margin to both wings, and the forewing discal cell and costa are also dark brown. In perfida however, the upperside costa, which can be seen in the above image, is golden yellow.
Anatrytone perfida is found from Colombia to Argentina.
Habitats
This is a high elevation transitional cloudforest / grassland species found at altitudes between about 2000-3000m.
