Panara phereclus, Satipo, Peru – Adrian Hoskins
Introduction
The genus Panara comprises of 5 species – jarbas, soana, phereclus, aureizona and ovifera. The wings of all species are black, marked with orange diagonal bands across the forewings. In jarbas there is additionally a straight orange median band across the hindwings.
Panara phereclus can easily be confused with several other metalmarks including Isapis agyrtus, Xenandra helius, and the orange-banded females of various Setabis species, so particular attention should be paid to the shape and position of the orange band, and to the wing shape.
Panara phereclus occurs in Guyana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
Habitats
This species inhabits pre-montane rainforest and cloudforest at altitudes between about 400-1200m.
