Introduction

The Pyrginae, popularly known as Flats or Spreadwings, are a cosmopolitan subfamily distributed across temperate and tropical habitats throughout the world. In the Americas there are 990 species.

The Eudamini includes 44 genera in the neotropical region.

The genus Cogia contains 15 species, distributed variously from California to Brazil and Argentina. They have dull earthy brown uppersides, which in some species are lightly marbled. Several species have hyaline spots on the forewings. The undersides are quite variable, being brown, marbled or reticulated with lighter or darker markings.

Cogia calchas is the most widespread species. It is distributed from Texas to northern Argentina.

Habitats

This species is found in disturbed forest habitats at elevations between sea level and about 800m.

Adult behaviour

The adults are normally encountered singly, nectaring at Senecio, Lantana, Eupatorium etc.
