Introduction

The tribe Melitaeini is of worldwide distribution. It includes the Crescents and Checkerspots, and also many familiar European species such as the Marsh, Glanville, Spotted and Heath Fritillaries.

There are 2 species in the genus Higginsius – miriam from Ecuador, and fasciata from Peru.

Higginsius fasciata is confined to central Peru.

Habitats

This species is found in cloudforest in the eastern Andes, at altitudes between about 2000-3000m.

Adult behaviour

Males are usually encountered singly or in low numbers, mud-puddling at roadsides and at the edges of small streams.
