Introduction
There are 4 species in the genus Gangara, all of which are Oriental in distribution. The butterflies are large, measuring up to 37mm in wingspan in the case of thyrsis.
Gangara thyrsis is distributed from India and Sri Lanka to south China, and south across peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra, Borneo, Palawan and Sulawesi.
Habitats
This species is found in lowland habitats, including banana plantations and beach hinterlands.
Lifecycle
The primary larval foodplant is banana Musa ( Musaceae ); but coconut Cocos and bertam palms Eugeissona ( Arecaceae ) are also used.
The larva according to Corbet & Pendlebury is blood-red, and covered with a loose, white, waxy filamentous material that rubs off if it is handled.
The pupa is formed within a rolled up leaf of the foodplant, and makes a rattling sound if disturbed.
Adult behaviour
The butterflies are crepuscular in behaviour, often visiting flowers at dusk, and entering buildings in the early evening when attracted by house lights.
