Cabirus procas, female, Pantiacolla, Rio Alto Madre de Dios, Peru – Adrian Hoskins

Introduction

The tribe Eudamini includes 44 genera in the neotropical region, amongst which are the Long-tailed Skippers Urbanus, Chioides, and Aguna; and such familiar genera as Phocides, Autochton, Astraptes, and Calaenorrhinus.

This unusual butterfly has very narrow antennae like a moth and is the sole member of the genus Cabirus. The insect illustrated is a female. In the male, the white areas and the veins within those areas are replaced by bright saffron yellow. Both sexes appear to be mimics of diurnal Geometrids.

Cabirus procas is distributed from Surinam, south through Amazonia to Peru and Bolivia.

Habitats

This species is found in primary rainforest at altitudes between about 100-800m.

Lifecycle

Unknown.

Adult behaviour

The flight is delicate and fluttering, unlike the skipping flight of most Pyrgine skippers.
