Introduction

There are 1237 described species of Hesperiine (grass-feeding skippers) in the neotropical region, and probably at least another 100 still awaiting discovery.

The genus Vettius comprises of 24 known species, all of which have dark brown uppersides with a distinctive pattern of hyaline spots on the forewings. The hindwings of several species including phyllus, chagres, aurelius, marcus, diversa, and coryna are white or silvery, with prominent orange-brown stripes.

Vettius coryna occurs as 4 named subspecies distributed variously from Mexico to Brazil.

Habitats

This species is found in forest-edge habitats, including riverbanks, roadsides, and sunny trails. It is most frequent in the vicinity of small streams and occurs at altitudes between about 500-2000m.

Adult behaviour

The butterflies are usually encountered as singletons, basking with wings half-open on low-growing herbage.
