Introduction

There are 9 species in the genus Caleta, variously distributed across south-east Asia. They can be mistaken in flight for Castalius, but Caleta have a much simpler and bolder pattern of dark brown spots and bars.

Caleta roxus is found in north-east India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Habitats

This pretty species is usually encountered in disturbed areas in forested areas including roadsides, riverbanks and village gardens. It is primarily a lowland butterfly, rarely found above 500m.

Lifecycle

The larval foodplant is Zizyphus ( Rhamnaceae ).

Adult behaviour

Males are usually seen in two’s and three’s, mud-puddling with other Lycaenidae on forest roads, but females tend to be found singly at rest on low vegetation.
