Introduction

The genus Catapaecilma comprises of about 10 species variously distributed from India to Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia.

There is some uncertainty regarding the distribution due to confusion with other similar species but Catapaecilma major is certainly the commonest and most widely distributed species. It is recorded from India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Sumatra, Sarawk, Sabah, Brunei and Java, but appears to be unknown from Kalimantan or Sulawesi.

Habitats

This species can be found in primary rainforest but also occurs in disturbed or secondary forest. It can be found at elevations between sea level and about 800m.

Lifecycle

The larval foodplant is Terminalia ( Combretaceae ).

Adult behaviour

Males are invariably encountered singly, either perching on foliage, or imbibing moisture from the ground. They always rest with the wings held erect. Females are normally only seen in flight, when searching for oviposition sites.
