Introduction

The 4 species which comprise the genus Protogoniomorpha, i.e. cytora, parhassus, anacardii and temora were formerly included in Salamis. They are entirely African in distribution.

Protogoniomorpha cytora arguably one of the most beautiful butterflies in Africa, and is distributed across the West African forest belt from Sierra Leone to Togo.

Habitats

This species is found in lowland forest habitats, including degraded forest and along roadsides.

Lifecycle

The eggs are laid on Acanthaceae.

Adult behaviour

The butterflies are usually found in one’s and two’s, basking on low foliage. They often adopt a head downwards posture, with their wings fully outspread.
