Introduction

The Pyrginae, popularly known as Flats or Spreadwings, are a cosmopolitan subfamily distributed across temperate and tropical habitats throughout the world. In the Americas there are 990 species.

The genus Gindanes is comprised of 3 species – brontinus which is distributed from Mexico to Peru, bora from Brazil, and brebisson.

Gindanes brebisson is the commonest and most widely distributed species, found from Mexico to Bolivia and Brazil. There are 4 subspecies.

Habitats

This is a forest species, found at elevations between about 200-1800m.

Adult behaviour

Males visit bird droppings, and also settle on river beaches and roadsides to imbibe moisture.
