Introduction
The Pyrginae, popularly known as Flats or Spreadwings, are a cosmopolitan subfamily distributed across temperate and tropical habitats throughout the world. In the Americas there are 990 species.
About 580 species are placed within the tribe Pyrgini.
The genus Viola comprises of 6 species variously distributed from Colombia to Guyana, and along the eastern Andes and upper Amazon to Peru and Bolivia. The species are all similar in appearance but vary in the configuration of the pale markings.
Viola violella is found in Peru and Bolivia.
Habitats
This species is found in primary rainforest at elevations between about 300-800m.
