Introduction

The tribe Melitaeini is of worldwide distribution. It includes the Crescents and Checkerspots of North America, and also many familiar European species such as the Marsh, Spotted and Heath Fritillaries.

Janatella are closely related to Castalia, Anthanassa and Eresia, in fact that these genera can only be distinguished by microscopic examination of the male genitalia.

There are 3 Janatella species – hera from Guyana, fellula from Colombia, and leucodesma which is the most widespread species being found from Nicaragua to Colombia and Venezuela.

Habitats

This species is found in disturbed forest at elevations between sea level and about 800m.

Adult behaviour

Both sexes are most commonly seen when nectaring at flowers or basking on low foliage.
